Vertical on a live axle, mounted infront or behind dont make any real difference (whatever fits ur application best) just keep them close to axle casing to best stop any twist/stress on the damper mount (mounting one on the front an one on rear is supposed to help when you load up the axle to help stop it twisting in the chassis Range/Land Rover did it for a few years and then stopped),are you using adjustable dampers? (I would), are you going to tie the axle in place with a panhard rod or? works well and only has a positive affect on comfort and performance.

WITHOUT GOING INTO ANGLES ETC. BOTTOM OF THE SHOCK AS CLOSE TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE AXLE AS YOU CAN, THEN THE TOP ABOUT 50mm NARROWER. ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME

Great to see it dusted down again - can't be many 7 cwt vans as rust free as this. Sorry, can't help on the optimum angle for the rear shockers, but definitely not vertical! The ones in the Escort are vertical (turreted Bilsteins) and they play havoc with an old guy's back :-)

sorry to say but why will vertical play havoc with your back?? your damping (possible springs) must be to hard nowt to do with them being vertical maybe running around in a van with no load in it??? thats why I suggested adjustable ones if possible, a damper is designed to do just that damp down your boingy spring, placing them at a slight agle as Jimmy has said is fine as its only 50mm this will allow for some axle articulation and still give you a straight load on the damper wich is the most important, with leaf springs vertical or a few mm in at the top either will be fine. If it was indipendant then def need to be at angle.... I agree Jon though nice little motor honestly cant remember seeing one for years..

What a solid van! I could really live with that, it is lovely. I hope you are keeping the lotus steels, they are the best wheels ever on Anglias, especially with small chrome hubcaps. All the best with the build guys!

Unfortunately, the lotus steels have gone. They disappeared about the same time as it's engine, which was loaned out, but blown up! (wasn't it Ryan) Apparently, it's having original 70's slot mags.
