Couple of weeks ago a slight rumble was detected, passenger side front wheel on the Fairlane. A new set of wheel bearings ordered, received and fitted. So the saga begins............
New bearings in place, off to borrow Marcus's ramp to do an autobox oil and filter change. Nearly there and a nasty rumble began.
Marcus confirms this sounds like a wheelbearing. Off comes the wheel, Marcus thinks the bearing was too tight, running hot, so it was re-greased and re-fitted. Set off in convoy with Marcus to meet Charlie and Simon at a small show at the trolley bus museum. Bearing got noisy again just after leaving the show, made it to Charlie's local where a decision was made to leave the Fairlane at Charlie & Bev's, grab a lift home from Bev (thanks Bev) and return later in the week with another set of new bearings...........
Fast forward to the end of the week, new bearings in hand, arrive at Charlie's to fit aforementioned bearings only to discover that I am a numpty 'cos I left the keys at home........... Wait for Flash to arrive with keys, fit new bearings, go to pub, eat the local speciality, a very large mixed grill, set off home and after about 30 miles hear a familiar sound, yep, there's that rumble again. I know it's big mixed grill but surely I'm not that heavy.........
Yet another set of bearings obtained, this time from a different supplier, (good job they are a common size) which are fitted at the Saturday afternoon session in the man cave, (thanks Simon, Marcus and Mark) so we can get to Leeds Cruise. Simon found a small gouge on the mating face of the hub which was quickly despatched with a die grinder and stone. Well chuffed, off to the cruise and back, no problems.
Sunday a.m. decide to go with Marcus and Claire to call at PK's, one junction up the motorway there's that familiar sound AGAIN. Turn round, manage to get back to garage, put car in, slam door and sulk.
So the story so far is three sets of bearings from two different suppliers, fitted by three different people, at three different places using two types of grease and still that grumble won't go away. Each set is only doing approx 25-30 miles at varying speeds (not above 60) so WTF is happening. Before I reach for the petrol can and zippo, any bright idea's anyone?
