Ok so Ive been bleating on about how I'm going to build a big garage. I'm a lucky boy because my dad is footing the bill, he even suggested it so thanks must go to him. He's not very well at the moment so his assistance is purely finance and inspiration, but that's good enough for me! I've finally got round to doing something about it so I thought I'd share the build with you guys. This week I've bought a prefabricated steel building, which is 60ft long, 30ft wide and 12ft high at the eaves (15ft at the ridge). This comes with an insulated composite roof and skylights, and plastisol coated steel side cladding. I've also ordered two roller shutter doors 3.5m wide, 3.2m high and a steel personnel access door. This will all be delivered in around four weeks. My pal around the corner is happy to take rubble so I hired a two ton dump truck and a small 360 excavator and this weekend, Chopper Charlie and I got on with removing the old crumbly concrete barn base which was no good to build on. First problem was the plant hire company delivered a one ton dumper. Very small but it was all they had so we made do! So we slogged away at it all weekend and now have a clear space ready for my mate from the village who is a builder to come and set out the shuttering and level everything up. I'll be rollering the area to prepare for the slab pouring. Some pics enclosed, including Harvey driving the digger. Next instalment to follow. Cheers, Simon

Yeah Bomber, I actually ordered it 35x60 then chickened out because it would have left a narrow gap between the garage and my office. I'm going to put in a mezzanine because I want a toilet / washroom and I don't want it hogging space downstairs. Also I can put my bike collection up there. Julie already suggested I put a bed in there....

Planning is ok because I am replacing an existing building which we pulled down a few years ago due to it being highly unsafe.

Thanks Kenny. I'm hoping to have an "erection" party, if we can get a few of the lads together I figure we can get the frame up and the roof on in a weekend, then it's just a case of cladding the sides.

Do you know what you're putting in that requires that electrickery stuff? Was there a cable across for the old building you pulled down? If not you're probably going to need one! Or is it coming from the nearest lamp post? Give us a quick rundown of what's going in and I'll tell you what size you need (oo er!) Plus we're always up for an 'erection' party, especially if as Lord Ken has indicated it involves a glass or two......

Cheers Jon, I need to talk to you about sparks. I've got power up to near the front of the building but will defo need a junction box to extend the cable and set it into the concrete to come up just inside the front wall. Also then I'll need some wiring under the concrete to where the 2 poster lift will sit. Also, what lighting would be best for such a big building? I need it to be bright so I can work in there!

I'm guessing ramp etc will be single phase? If your having a mezzanine floor, a combination of flourescents and 'high bay' metal halide fittings would be ok. Plus there's sockets, compressor, welder etc. Need to have a visit and decide how best to black out the village......................
