Steering Crazy..... Ok so I've been playing with the steering column all DAY... First job was to work out the angle of the new column and how low I could mount it into the front bulk head.... Next I cut s 42mm hole in the bulk head and slotted a piece of old exhaust tube into it and sat in the seat with the steering wheel(Making loud engine noises....LOL)So that I could get an idea of how long the new column needed to be and at what angle... So next job was too cut the ends off the old steering column and weld them to a new piece of tube.I've also welded a flat washer onto the top piece to act as a stop and also to help it stay true when turning rather than relying on the weld like before... I've had to use a larger tube so that the old pieces would slide inside and then weld into place nice and tight... Whilst I was making the column up I'd had some nylon bushes made for bearings between the outer tube and the new .. Here is the column in place and ready for me to cut and weld the lower end for the first UJ... CHeers Marcus

;D ;D While you have solved that problem you have solved another aswell On the earlier pic of the old style steering i had to take a part of the side of the oil filter housing (see threaded holes) it wouldnt fit due to steering but now you have moved the column down a bit it looks like its gonna clear it now ;D ;D ;D It must feel more like a car now it has a steering column

Hi Adam, am pleased we have solved a job with out even realising it... Although the column is made its not finished as yet.I've got the supports to make and weld in,a bracket to make for the centre bearing, piece all of the steering joints together, brackets to make for the rack to sit on and also some sort of bracket to fasten it down with. On top of that some nice thick gussets to weld in-between the chassis and the tubes for the strut tops, strut top mounts and when ya just think that its all done, there is some brackets to be made and welded in to place for the compression arms.... I haven't even looked at the radiator or back axle yet... Cheers Marcus

If you want to leave the back axel for now and ill have a look at splines etc when i get it home then ill put the wanted ad up then for gears, aftermarket shafts and spool. Will the steering be easy to take of the links as i have to put my headers on by lifting the enging and lifting my headers through the gap as they dont fit anyother way Its maybe how the pic is took but it looks like the steering is close to fouling the throttle pedal and looks like the steering runs of to the door ! I know its only mocked up but just thought id mention now rather than when its welded in place ;D Also steering looks like its gonna be a nice neat little job, Didnt expect anyother but its good to see ;D ;D Thanks keep it up

Adam the throttle pedal is going to need adjusting, unfortunatly its the lesser of the two evils.... The steering UJ's and shafts/bearing will all easily unbolt(not welded togehter this time) afterwards to allow the removal of exhaust/engine no problem. The column is a little slack at the moment but when I sat in the car with the wheel and shut the door it was lined up "Honest" Cheers Marcus
