I'm wanting a cheap v8 for a new project. i know rover v8's are cheap, but they're built for torque rather than power aren't they? Or does that not really matter? What kind of power output would you get from one? And is it best to EFI or carb?

Get a Chevy or Ford SB V8 cheaper to repair than the Rover and more power, fuel injection needs all engine management electronics more hasse!!1 Old school V8 with a 4 barrel carb great.........that's my view

V8's are not as cheap to repair as a 4 cylinder...
But I think it depends on what sort of power your after, your budget to buy it and install it, also if your running a standard motor then standard ecu and fuel injection is better to start with.....

Nothing wrong with a rover, but to make BHP on the cheap, 350 Chevy or 302 ford would be good starting points. Parts are plentiful and cheap. No substitute for cubic inches and a 3.5 rover only gives you 215. Marcus is into the Lexus LS V8 and as an ex toyota employee I do know it's one of the best engineered motors on the planet, good for half a million miles plus, but it's complex and would need the ECU and sensors from the original car which is ok because you get the whole driving thing for £500-£1000 all in, then you can get the gearbox and suspension, all the brains and sensors, and some comfy leather seats too.. In fact just buy the Lexus and drive that!

I'm with Bomber on this one, SBC or SBF with the relevant choice of gearbox, carb & distributor - simples. You don't need the rest of the donor car to go with it to make it work, or a degree in quantum nuclear physics and a NASA computer to make it run. Millions of hot rodders can't be wrong.
