Right Chaps, here is the score with the engine. It is '68 Hi Perf 396 BBC as fitted to Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, El Camino, Caprice SS cars. I t has 'closed chamber heads', these give higher compression, so better torque at low revs, great for street! The later 454s have 'open chamber heads' which give a lower compression but breathe better, all to do with emmisions in the 70s. Ideally for racing you nedd a cross between the two, high compression and room to let air in and exhaust out quickly, so you get torque to accelerate and BHP for speed. I have a set of Pro Comp open chamber ally heads but to put these on would lower compession without replacing the pistons for domed ones, which would give the desired effect. The problem is, that to do that I may aswell bore and stroke it at the same time, as the bigger pistons, rods etc would be the same price. The biggest you can safely do this to a 396 is 461, so buying the parts, machining and assembly would out weigh the cost of doing it to a bigger block or buying a different motor more suited to racing, it is as Charlie says a 'small big block but a very rare one! So I wanted to give anyone a chance who has a '68 project going on a chance to use the motor rather than messing with it. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBIC INCHES AND ALCAHOL
