Has anyone had good experiences of a garage for hassle free engins swaps in Nottinghamshire or near by? I have niether the personal ability or the facilities to do the whole engine swap for my Consul Capri. I plan to put in a 2.0l Pinto and five speed box when I can find same but could do with a place who can source parts for me as well as fit.

Dax You could ask our resident hot rod garage owner (he of 100E and '39 Ford build ups on this 'ere forum), unfortunately his premises are in Lincolnshire and he'll definitely tell you to forget the boat anchor pinto in favour of something more modern - see aforementioned build thread for his 100E) - I'd have to agree with him on that point - a 2.0 Zetec with a type 9 would be perfect.

I would agree with all tbolt said about a more modern engine in the Capri as they are a lot lighter and more user friendly..
And as for Marcus a great chap with a lot of knowledge...

Cheers guys, I'd be happy to help with any advice, but unfortunately have got loads on at the minute and couldn't really take on another project for a while. Modern engine would be my first bit of advice, pinto's are HEAVY and under powered, unless you can afford to chuck loads of money at them. A lot of people jump for a 2.0l Zetec but a 1.6l would give more power than a pinto and good fuel economy, it really does depend on what your after, again its only money that will put a limitation on your build and performance really.
Cheers Marcus

The choice of a Pinto is really one of simplicity. The Zetec seems to require a lot more physical change to the car compared with the Pinto however I haven't done it so don't know for certain. The result of less work hopefully being lower cost. I'm after more driveablilty (over taking on the M1 not being quite so exciting when you pull out etc).

If it's anything like a zetec swap into a 105E Anglia, (which we're on with - very slowly!), there's no under hood chopping, they fit with a minimum of fuss (smaller & a lot lighter then a pinto)and there's probably a tad more room under your hood than a 105E. The one thing you really should do is swap out the steering box etc for a rack & pinion - creates more room. Escort mk1 & 2 stuff can work well and there is a good supply. Sump and exhaust manifold need changing (as they would with a pinto) but there are off the shelf parts available. The pinto and zetec have the same bellhousing pattern so you would use the same 5 speed type 9 gearbox for both engines, but a bit of tin massaging around the gearbox tunnel will be necessary with either engine. You can run a zetec on carbs, aftermarket throttle bodies and ECU or use the original Ford stuff. Fitting a pinto will certainly give you a lot of grief, they're big and heavy and won't give anything like as good performance and gas mileage as a zetec. It's a bit of a no brainer really. Having said all that, if you don't want to carry out too many modifications to your car, what about fitting a 1600 OHV crossflow engine(as in the Mk1 & 2 Escort, Mk2 & 3 Cortina & Capri)? Fit straight in with only a sump and oil pick up swap from your engine, bolts up to your gearbox and will give you more oomph. No need to change steering, radiator etc.Loads of tuning options as well. The previous engine in our Anglia van was a bored out(1700)crossflow with a stage 2 GT head, exhaust manifold and weber carb, and was a load of fun. Not as good MPG as a zetec, but a quicker and cheaper swap.

V8 - possibly overkill for what I want although I appreciate too much is never quite enough. Pinto vs Zetec - the number one problem with a Zetec is getting it done. I know that sounds lame but I don't have the skills or facilities to do it myself and I'm really struggling to find a shop that isn't hundreds of miles away who will do the work. Whereas a Pinto seems to be far less challenging to find a garage who will do it and has done before. All the other pluses stack up on the side of a Zetec. 1600 OHV Crossflow - possibly but if I'm going to get it done is it beter to just do what I want doing in the first place (that said, see above).
The reality is I'd probably like a Zetec, just like all the cool kids have. And it does have many plus points compared to the older lumps even if it costs a little more for set up.
Arrgh....choices.
